Units 7 to 12

Going to

plans and evidence

Formal explanation

We use am / is / are + going to + base verb for two main jobs. First, a plan the speaker has already decided. Second, a prediction based on something we can see or know now.

I am going to join the 9 o’clock class.
She is going to take the Foundation test.
They are going to move to PECHS.
Negative: I am not going to miss class.
Question: Are you going to come tomorrow?
  • Plan already decided: I am going to buy a new notebook after class.
  • Evidence now: Look at those clouds. It is going to rain.
EREKA examples
We are going to start Pack 2 today.
Ali is going to sit in the front row.
Are you going to finish Unit 7 before Friday?

Now answer

1. I ______ revise irregular verbs tonight. I already decided.

2. Look at the sky. It ______ rain.

3. ______ she going to join Beginner after Foundation?

4. They ______ miss the test. They promised.

5. Choose the plan sentence.

U8

Will

offers, promises, instant decisions

Formal explanation

Will is followed by the base verb. We use it when the decision is made at the moment of speaking, when we offer help, when we promise, or when we predict without a present plan in front of us.

I / you / he / she / we / they will help.
Negative: I will not (won’t) forget.
Question: Will you help me?
  • Instant decision: The room is hot. I will open the window.
  • Offer: I will explain Unit 8 again.
  • Promise: I will send the notes tonight.
  • Prediction: English will help you at work.

Do not write “I will to go.” The word after will is the bare verb: go, come, help, send.

EREKA examples
Wait. I will write the example on the board.
Will you sit with a new partner today?
Don’t worry. I will not give the test tomorrow.

Now answer

1. The bag is heavy. I ______ carry it.

2. ______ you help me with this sentence?

3. I ______ forget your name. This is a promise.

4. Choose the correct form.

5. The phone is ringing. I ______ it. Decision now.

U9

Will or going to?

choose the better form

Formal explanation

Both forms talk about the future, but they are not the same tool. Going to is the plan you already made, or the result you can see coming. Will is the decision you make now, the offer, the promise, or a general prediction.

Plan: I am going to take Beginner in October. I decided last week.
Now: The marker is dry. I will take another one.
Evidence: He has no bag. He is not going to stay long.
Promise: I will check your writing tonight.

In conversation both forms sometimes appear close. At Foundation level, keep the two jobs separate. If the plan is old, use going to. If the mouth decides now, use will.

EREKA examples

You look tired. I will give you a shorter task.

1. I booked the seat yesterday. I ______ travel on Friday.

2. The board is dirty. I ______ clean it.

3. Look at that queue. We ______ wait a long time.

4. I promise. I ______ message you the homework.

5. Better sentence for a decided plan:

Present perfect 2

just, already, yet, for, since

Formal explanation

Pack 1 introduced have / has + past participle. Pack 2 adds the small words that students meet every week.

Just = a moment ago: She has just arrived.
Already = sooner than expected: I have already finished.
Yet = until now, in questions and negatives: Have you finished yet? I have not finished yet.
For + a period: for two hours, for three years.
Since + a starting point: since Monday, since 2024, since morning.

Place just and already after have/has: I have just eaten. I have already eaten. Place yet at the end: I have not eaten yet.

EREKA examples
The teacher has just entered Room B.
Have you done Pack 1 yet?
I have studied at EREKA for two months.
She has lived in Karachi since 2019.

Now answer

1. The class has ______ started. You are only two minutes late.

2. I have not printed the notes ______.

3. We have used this room ______ January.

4. They have been students here ______ six weeks.

5. I have ______ completed Pack 1, so I can start Pack 2.

U11

Present perfect or past simple?

time named or not named

Formal explanation

Use past simple when the finished time is given or clearly finished. Use present perfect when you do not name that finished time, or when the period is still open (today, this week, in my life so far).

I saw him yesterday. (yesterday is finished)
I have seen him before. (no finished time)
She joined EREKA in March. (March is a finished point)
She has joined three courses so far. (the list can still grow)

Words that pull you to past simple: yesterday, last, ago, in 2020, when I was a child. Words that pull you to present perfect: ever, never, already, yet, just, so far, today, this week.

EREKA examples
Did you come yesterday? Yes, I came at nine.
Have you ever studied in this room? Yes, I have.
I finished Unit 6 last night. I have already started Unit 11.

Now answer

1. I ______ this page last night.

2. ______ you ever visit Lahore?

3. She ______ EREKA in 2025.

4. I ______ three units today. Today is not finished.

5. Choose the correct pair.

U12

If + present, will

first look at real future conditions

Formal explanation

When one future action depends on another, English often uses if + present simple in the condition, and will + base verb in the result. The if-part is not in the future tense.

If I finish Pack 2, I will start Pack 3.
If it rains, we will sit inside.
If she is late, the class will begin without her.
If you do not practise, you will not remember.

Wrong: If I will finish Pack 2, I will start Pack 3. Do not put will in the if-part at this level.

You can reverse the order: I will start Pack 3 if I finish Pack 2. When if is in the middle, you usually drop the comma.

EREKA examples
If you open Chrome, the sound will work better.
If the student is absent, we will mark the register.
You will feel stronger if you repeat the quiz.
